Google Script - Create a Drop-Down List from Spreadsheet Column

(Updated on 3/21/2017 - triggers have been moved!) ( I just created a new related post on how to create a multiple choice  question on the form that a bit simplified - takes the "other" answers in a multiple choice question on a form, and updates the multiple choice options with those as options.) I guess it was only a matter of time before I ended up dabbling with Google Scripts.  Today I was asked by a teacher how he could populate a drop-down list on his Google Form from data on a spreadsheet - and have it update as he changed the data.  Not finding an add-on for this (why recreate the wheel? :-)  I explored creating a script.  And...discovered that this task is not too hard! To do this yourself - 1. Create your form.   Really important step.  Make sure to create your drop-down item and give it a title, but you do not need to add any options to it (because later you will populate it from the spreadsheet). 2. Create the spreadsheet whe...

Google Scripts - Adding a Template Table to the Top of a Meeting Agenda On Demand

That seems like a weird title for this post, but I was trying to be as descriptive as possible - though the script will work for other uses as well with some easy modifications.  I was posed the following problem by a person at one of our local districts: "Looking for a way for teachers on a [district] Team to be able to click on a link so that this blank template shows up above their prior week's entries. Does this make sense?"  As I have not done much with using scripts in documents, I was eager to try this. Surprisingly, I was able to craft this one in less than 24 hours!  And now, I see a myriad of ways that it could be used in other situations. What this script does :   When opening the document, an additional menu is added (1).  When the user selects to "Add a Table" from the menu, it adds an additional template table (2) below the top level document table, but above everything else.   It also adds a horizontal rule between...

So my #MACUL16 Tipsheets generated some ideas from all of you! Here's a bonus tipsheet with your ideas - Bring a power strip to make new friends at crowded outlets. ~Carol Isakson Get to your sessions early. Once a session is full, the doors will be closed and a “Session Full”  sign should be visible. If you see a session full sign on a door or a representative tells you it is full, please respect that and do not enter. Don't try to fill every session slot . Spend an hour in the exhibit hall or just sitting and reflecting on other sessions. Your brain and your feet both need a rest sometime. ~Andy Losik Wear your badge . The badge holder and lanyard will be in your conference bag. You will pick up your bag after check-in. Before you arrive at the conference stop by the store and grab some easy to eat bananas, granola bars, etc. ~The President (?? Not sure which president!) Come celebrate our 40th anniversary with us on Thursday night! The MACUL party wil...

Google Forms - Question Types part I

By -
Image
There are a variety of types of questions that can be used on a Google Form.  Sometimes it is hard to know which one is best, even with the Google "smarts" trying to pick the right one for you based on what you type.  I am creating several posts that provide a run down of the (current) types of questions you can set up, along with some of the small differences between the types.  First up is the Multiple choice, Checkboxes, and Dropdown options. Second will be the Short answer and Paragraph options. Third will be the Linear grid, Multiple choice grid and Checkbox grid. Forth will be Date and Time. Last will be the file upload.  The Multiple choice, checkbox and dropdown question types are all similar to each other.  There are some small differences that make each one advantageous in different situations.  First up - Multiple choice.  You don't even have to select this one, as it is the default question - Once you have typed in your que...
