Public Domain Day - January 1, 2020

What do the following works all have in common? musical composition of Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin  The Man in the Brown Suite by Agatha Christie When We Were Very Young  by A.A. Milne The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann the first film adaption of Peter Pan* They all entered the US public domain on January 1, 2020! On that day works from 1924 entered the US public domain " where they will be free for all to use and build upon, without permission or fee ." As a historic note, these works would have entered public domain in 2000, but Congress extended copyright terms to 95 years, so we just began having yearly release of works into the public domain in 2019 again.  Why is this important?  Yearly new works are made available for a variety of uses.  From the Center for the Study of the Public Domain (maintained by Duke Law): How will people celebrate this trove of cultural material? MKL Day Volunteer Project Financial Support

The Michigan Community Service Commission is providing volunteer project support to Michigan organizations as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service 2020. Note that projects engaging youth volunteers & financial literacy will be given preference.  All proposed events or activities must occur on or around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day beginning Friday January 17, 2020 through Friday January 24, 2020. Preference will be given to events that occur sometime during Friday, January 17th through Monday, January 20th. Awards valued at up to $1,000 are available from partners Michigan Nonprofit Association and Youth Service America and will be distributed based on the following scale: $1,000- Engage 300 or more youth volunteers $750- Engage 100 or more youth volunteers $500- Engage 50 or more volunteers $250- Engage at least 25 volunteers $100- Engage at least 10 volunteers All partners must provide $1 for $1 cash or in-kind match suppor...

From the Michigan Department of Natural Resources -  Help design the 2020 wild turkey patch K-12 students, here’s a chance to make your mark by submitting the winning design for the 2020 wild turkey patch! All entries must be received by Dec. 31, 2018. Original, hand-completed designs should include an eastern wild turkey or components of a turkey (e.g., feathers, tracks). Drawings may be done in any medium (pencil, oil, pen and ink, chalk, crayon, etc.) and be color or black and white. If color, no more than 13 colors may be used. All entries must be submitted on 8.5-inch-by-11-inch paper, and submitted without mat, glass, frame or cover sheet (spray chalk with fixative).
