The Michigan Community Service Commission is providing volunteer project support to Michigan organizations as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service 2020. Note that projects engaging youth volunteers & financial literacy will be given preference.  All proposed events or activities must occur on or around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day beginning Friday January 17, 2020 through Friday January 24, 2020. Preference will be given to events that occur sometime during Friday, January 17th through Monday, January 20th. From the Mini-Grant Coordinator: We are pleased to announce that the Mini Grants and FOCUS Grant will be available again for the 2018-2019 school year. The Guido A. and Elizabeth H. Binda Foundation has generously provided the Mini Grant Program with $20,000 for twenty awards and up to $1,000 for projects that align with district-approved curriculum.  In addition, one FOCUS Grant of up to $5,000 will be awarded.  The FOCUS Grant project needs to "focus" on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with the emphasis being on Mathematics and Science curriculum.  These grants are available to all public school teachers and support staff in Barry, Branch, and Calhoun Counties in Michigan. From MACUL Big Deal Media: Stand Up To Cancer  (SU2C) and  PBS LearningMedia  have announced  The Emperor Science Award Program , an initiative that will encourage disadvantaged high school students to pursue careers in science, with particular emphasis on cancer research, through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. The education initiative is being launched in connection with  Ken Burns Presents  Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies ,  a three-part, six-hour  film  on the history of cancer that will air on  PBS  on  April 1 . Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 awardees (high school students from Title I or similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools) will receive $1,500 grants as well as one-on-one science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule.
