The United States Senate Youth Program, established in 1962 by U.S. Senate Resolution, is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. The 58th annual program will be held in Washington, D.C., from March 7-14, 2020. It provides an opportunity for qualified high school juniors and seniors to deepen their understanding of America’s political processes. Great opportunity for students to propose and create an initiative! "Strive for a Safer Drive (S4SD) is a teen driving initiative aimed at reducing serious traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities among Michigan’s most inexperienced drivers – teens.  It is presented by Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP)." Participation is free and could save a life. All Michigan high schools are eligible to apply.  Up to 50 schools will be selected to receive $1,000 to develop and implement a student-led, peer-to-peer traffic safety awareness campaign.  Campaign topics may include distracted driving, seat belts, impaired driving, speeding, and winter driving. Great opportunity for teachers of Word War II!  This program is selecting 18 teachers to "study the experiences of America’s World War II soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen as they fought throughout the Pacific." Teachers selected are involved in an 18-month learning journey that includes a weekend in Washington DC and 12 day Pacific field study experience.  Teacher will be developing content and lesson materials for the website as part of the experience.

I know we are barely into fall, but the Cold is Cool sign up opportunity has returned for the 2015-2016 ski season! From MACUL Big Deal Media: Stand Up To Cancer  (SU2C) and  PBS LearningMedia  have announced  The Emperor Science Award Program , an initiative that will encourage disadvantaged high school students to pursue careers in science, with particular emphasis on cancer research, through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. The education initiative is being launched in connection with  Ken Burns Presents  Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies ,  a three-part, six-hour  film  on the history of cancer that will air on  PBS  on  April 1 . Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 awardees (high school students from Title I or similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools) will receive $1,500 grants as well as one-on-one science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule. Michigan Residents invited to help eliminate, reform criminal laws From an announcement provided by Michigan Representative Brett Roberts: With nearly 1,000 sections, Michigan’s penal code is eight times larger than the Model Penal Code and substantially larger than other Midwest codes, according to a recent study by the Manhattan Institute for Public Research and Mackinac Center for Public Policy. Lawmakers are focusing on repealing unnecessary and outdated statutes, adjusting disproportionately high criminal penalties and ensuring that penalties are consistent for similar crimes. People can participate in their state government by submitting ideas to reform outdated criminal laws to a legislative workgroup.    High school government classes are encouraged to research Michigan laws and participate in the statewide reform as well.
