Google Mail - Adding a Person to Your Email Contacts

Image
There are 2 ways to have people you email (or that email you) added to your email contacts list.  If you wish for contacts to automatically be added,  you can go into your Google Mail settings and under General, find this option down the page just above the Signature area - If you prefer to add them manually, when in an email of someone you wish to add to your contacts, click on the More menu (stacked 3 dots) on the right side of the email -  Select to Add the person to Contacts list - the 5th item down the menu - That's it!  Going forward that person's email will show up as part of an auto-fill when typing their name.

Google Classroom - Add a Topic for Organizing your Classwork

Image
Topics can be used to organize your Classwork.  These do not affect your Stream; it more acts as a filter for items that are in the Classwork area of your Classroom.  Any topic you create can be assigned to an assignment, quiz, question, material, or even something you bring over from another Classroom. To create a topic for use with your Classroom, first click on Classwork in the top middle - Click on the Create button - Select Topic from the pop-up list - Type in the name of the topic (1) and then click Add (2) - The topics you create will show up on the left sidebar after each is created -

Google Scripts - Adding a Template Table to the Top of a Meeting Agenda On Demand

Image
That seems like a weird title for this post, but I was trying to be as descriptive as possible - though the script will work for other uses as well with some easy modifications.  I was posed the following problem by a person at one of our local districts: "Looking for a way for teachers on a [district] Team to be able to click on a link so that this blank template shows up above their prior week's entries. Does this make sense?"  As I have not done much with using scripts in documents, I was eager to try this. Surprisingly, I was able to craft this one in less than 24 hours!  And now, I see a myriad of ways that it could be used in other situations. What this script does :   When opening the document, an additional menu is added (1).  When the user selects to "Add a Table" from the menu, it adds an additional template table (2) below the top level document table, but above everything else.   It also adds a horizontal rule between...

Google Calendar - Create a Second Calendar

Image
Here is a video on  how to create an additional calendar , if you prefer. Using multiple calendars is a good strategy for controlling what information is shared with others.  There are 4 reasons I often hear educators creating multiple calendars -  reminders for you (that don't make you "busy" when others look at your main calendar) for events specific to a project (to separate them from your day-to-day events) managing tasks with due dates (especially items you do not want on your main calendar) shared events with a group (a calendar where everyone can add/change events without changing each others main calendar) To create a second (or additional) calendar to use, go to the + by the "Add a coworker's calendar" in the middle of the left side bar: Click on that + to see a variety of options - select New calendar: A window will pop up, enter in the Name of your additional calendar, then click on CREATE CALENDAR: That's it!  T...

Google Drive - Adding Images

Image
Recently there was an update making it easier to add Images in Google Docs, Slides and Drawings.  Here are some screenshots of the new drop-down menu and what each option results in. Upload from computer When you select this: You get the standard pop-up window where you can select the image from a location on your computer. Search the web When you select this: A sidebar opens on the right side of the window, with a search bar at the top for you to find an image without leaving your document/drawing/slideshow.  Drive When you select this: You again get a sidebar in the right side of the window with direct connection to your Google Drive, so you can easily find and use the image.  Photos When you select this: You again get a sidebar in the right side of the window with direct connection to your Google Photos, so you can easily find and use the image. By URL When you select this: You get a pop-up window where you can paste in th...
