Google Classroom - Updating Profile and Your Notification Settings

Image
Settings can be found multiple places in Google Classroom.  One of the places that is overlooked - but controls the number of email notifications you get from your classrooms - is in the sidebar.  Notifications and your profile settings can be changed here. Click on the 3 stacked lines on the left side - you can do this when in a classroom, or on the general classroom page. Scroll all the way to the bottom to select Settings - This is one place you can change your profile settings - note that this is your profile for your G Suite account NOT just for Classroom- Below that is where you can set your notification settings to decide how much and what types of email notifications you want for your classrooms - At the bottom of the list of notifications is a drop down list where you can choose which courses to get notifications for, and which ones you want "silent" -

Google Calendar - Unsubscribe from a Calendar

Image
Sometimes you no longer want a calendar - you just don't need it anymore.  Yet, it is still a calendar either owned by or used by other people.  In this case, you cannot delete the calendar, but you can unsubscribe from it.  This will remove it from your calendar list, but others will still have access to it. (Here is a video on How to Unsubscribe from a Calendar if you prefer.) To unsubscribe from a calendar: Go to your calendar list, and hover over the calendar you want to delete to find the Options menu (or More Menu) - Choose Settings and sharing - Scroll all the way to the bottom of the settings - the options for removing a calendar are there.  Select Unsubscribe - You will get a confirmation window, select to Remove calendar -

Google Calendar - How to Add Notifications for All Events on a Specific Calendar

Image
With Google Calendar, you can set notifications to the calendar which will be assigned to every event you create as part of that calendar, OR you can set notifications for a specific event. This gives you total flexibility over the notifications you receive, yet saves you time by being able to set them by the calendar. Today we are going to explore how to set notifications for all events on a specific calendar. Yesterday we looked at how to add a notification for a specific, single event . (Here is a video on how to set notifications for all events on a specific calendar  if you prefer.) To set the notifications, you need to have the left sidebar visible with your list of calendars (click on the stacked 3 lines or "pancake" if they are not showing) - Mouse over the calendar you want to set this for, and click on the More menu (stacked 3 dots) - In the pop-up that appears, click on Settings and sharing - Scroll about halfway down the settings to find Event ...

Google Calendar - How to Set the Default Event Length

Image
In the calendar settings, you can set the default event length.  This is useful if you are constantly changing your meetings/events to the same length - and it is not the default length pre-set. One note - if you are in a view that displays more than 1 week, the default is full day event.  This default event length will only work in the day view or the week view. (Here is a video on how to set the default event length if you prefer.) To set this, first go to Calendar Settings (the gear) -  Choose Settings - On the right side, select Event settings - Look for the default duration, this is at the top of the event settings - Choose the length of time that you want to be the default (the one you use the most...) -

Google Mail - Gmail Shortcuts

Image
It has been over 5 years since I posted about keyboard shortcuts to Google Mail, so I think it is time again!  Here's the repost with some updates, and a few of my favorite shortcuts that I think save me lots of time cumulatively! Some people have expressed frustration to me because "things just happen" while they are in their email.  Typically, as we tend to be short of possessed devices, it is because they have unintentionally used one or more of the built in email shortcuts. So, how do you know the shortcuts?  And, how can you turn them off (or on)? Well, to know they are enabled or not, you need to check your email settings.  To do this go to the gear and select Settings: Once the settings are displayed, make sure you are looking at the General Settings, and scroll down until you see  Keyboard shortcuts: .  This will tell you if they are on or off: Turn them on or off, as desired, and make sure to "Save Changes" at the bottom o...

Google Calendar - New Calendar General Settings

Image
Just as the calendar settings are similar but reorganized, the general Calendar settings are also a bit rearranged.  Also, it isn't intuitive how to go create an additional calendar.  Here are the general settings in the updated Calendar. The gear will still get you to your Calendar settings.  (You can also get to it when you are looking at a individual calendar's settings.) - When accessing settings, you have 3 options that appear above your calendars: General: general settings for your G Calendar account Add calendar: location to go to create an additional delegate calendar Import & export: place to go for importing a calendar or exporting one of your Google Calendars If you click on General, you have this sub-menu show up in the left-hand navigation pane.  These section titles let you move quickly to the area of the settings you want to get to - In the main content area (where the calendar is viewable), you have corresponding sections. ...

Google Calendar - Updated Individual Calendar Settings

Image
Along with a new look, the settings are a bit different in Calendars now.  Not only do they look a bit different, but they are reorganized also.  Here's a brief overview of what can be found where now.   First, when you right-click on a calendar (or click the arrow to the right of a calendar), the menu is simplified from what it was previously.  There are now only 3 options (left side of picture below) -  Display this only Hide from list Settings & Sharing When you select Settings & Sharing for a calendar, another list appears directly below that calendar - That list matches each section of the settings that appear in the content window (where the calendar normally displays) - The following sections and corresponding information can be found in the settings above: Calendar settings : the calendar name, description, time zone and (if applicable) organization the calendar belongs to. Auto-accept invitations: set if invitation...

Google Calendar - updated Calendar menus

Image
One of the biggest changes with the Google Calendar updates is the reorganization of the menu/setting options.  The initial layer is cleaned up.  The secondary layer is at first glance overwhelming, but if you take a few minutes to look through it you realize that there is really not much new there - it is just that reorganization of the items. First - here is a look at the new next to the old menus when you right click on a calendar - The colors are cleaned up and reorganized, and there are only a few options on this menu now.  The "Display only" and "Hide from list" options are now a little more obvious than they were before.  Everything else is now the the third option - Settings and sharing.  Here is what you get when you select that for a calendar - All those items listed above are actually links to the various sections now found in the main content area of the page -  There really isn't much new, but there is some rewording of several...
